Climate Appropriate Exterior Materials for Central Texas Homes

Central Texas asks more of exterior materials than almost any market in the country: hundred degree summers, brutal UV on south and west exposures, hail seasons, and the occasional hard freeze for variety. Here is what holds up, system by system.

Roofing

Impact rated shingles are the local default upgrade

Shingles are rated for impact resistance under UL 2218, Class 1 through Class 4. Class 4 shingles survive a 2 inch steel ball drop without cracking, which maps loosely to golf ball hail. Two reasons they make sense here:

• Insurance credits. Many Texas carriers discount premiums for Class 3 and Class 4 roofs. Over a roof's life the discount can offset much of the upgrade cost. Ask your carrier for their specific credit before you buy.
• Claim avoidance. The best claim is the one you never need. A Class 4 roof shrugs off the marginal storms that total builder grade shingles.

One caveat: some carriers pair discounts with cosmetic damage waivers. Read what you sign.

Ventilation and radiant barriers do the quiet work

A reroof is the moment to fix attic ventilation, ridge vents matched to soffit intake, and to consider radiant barrier decking. In our summers, radiant barriers meaningfully cut attic temperatures, which your AC bill notices.

Metal

Standing seam metal runs far longer than asphalt and reflects heat well. It costs substantially more up front, and large hail can dent it, which is usually cosmetic but matters if your policy excludes cosmetic metal damage. For many homes here, Class 4 asphalt is the value play and metal is the longevity play.

Siding and trim

Fiber cement (the James Hardie category) is the Central Texas workhorse: it does not rot, does not feed termites, holds paint well past a decade, and takes hail better than vinyl or hardboard. Engineered wood like LP SmartSide is lighter and warmer looking with similar durability claims. Vinyl struggles here; Texas sun makes it brittle and heat can warp it. Most local homes are masonry with wood trim, and upgrading failing trim to fiber cement trim boards ends the rot cycle permanently.

Exterior paint

• 100 percent acrylic latex is the baseline for Texas exteriors; it flexes with thermal movement instead of cracking.
• Primer on bare wood, always. Most premature failures here are prep failures, not paint failures.
• Color choice is a durability choice. Dark colors on south and west walls fade fastest and run hottest. If you want drama, put it on the shaded elevation or the front door.
• Elastomeric coatings bridge hairline stucco cracks, but they are a commitment; once on, future coats must be compatible.

Gutters

Central Texas rain arrives in bursts. Five inch seamless gutters are standard; six inch are worth it under big roof planes and Live Oak canopies, with leaf protection if you have overhanging trees.
